Design, once styles applied and front characters removed. Grep was used once again to remove the first character (exclamation mark or hyphen) of the each paragraph. The turquoise and grey backgrounds filling the anchored text frames were applied in the text paragraph styles, clip to frames was applied in the style to fill the text box. ![]() The same procedure was carried out for paragraphs beginning with – (hyphen). Data merged text from randomized Excel.įinally paragraph styles were applied and the front character removed.Ī Grep find was used to find Paragraphs beginning with the ! (exclamation mark) and this was given a chosen style. Text from the Excel CSV started with either an ! (exclamation mark) or a – (hyphen). Bottom text frame with text vertical justification applied.Ī data merge was applied to the indesign file and text was imported into each anchored frame. This will force the text lines to fill the frame should it need to stretch. The justification of the bottom frame was set to vertical justify. Bottom text frame with auto height applied. ![]() The final bottom fixed panel was placed as an anchored object with Bottom text frame with auto height applied allowing the panel to stretch to fit if needed. The taller final text frame was allowed to automatically resize its height, so to buffer and fill any space in the column left over. These frames were designed to flow between the three columns. Inside the master three column text frame was placed 34 individual Anchored text frames, each with a minimum 5mm height to keep size consistency and auto height applied to allow the frame to resize for two line company names. This text frame was set to “Balance columns”, meaning the items placed inside would automatically balance visually. It contained a three column text frame on the only page. The data merge was the more simple part of this project.Ī master InDesign single page document was created for the data merge master. Single Excel sheet calling data from 125 sheets, ready to export to InDesign for Data merge. These were saved as CSV for export into InDesign using data merge.Įxample of random and static names – bottom five will be static (highlighted) on each sheet.Ģ9 randomized names with five added static names.Įxcel document with company names, randomized to 125 data sheets. Eight files of randomized names were produced in total. Each sheet would equal one InDesign page. Excel itself has a sheet size limit, so to keep processing time down and stay with in the Excel limit, we spit each set of 500 cards into 4 documents of 125 sheets of 34 randomized companies. All these ! (exclamation mark) prefixed firms were to be the highlighted businesses. ![]() The Five static company names were added into the single list, each prefixed with an ! (exclamation mark). The Excel was also built to added a – (hyphen) in front of the remaining 24. The Excel document also Added an ! (exclamation mark) in front of five of the company names. I created an Excel document that took a list of 29 companies, and randomized the order of these companies.I've also truncated the data in the "desc" tag: Here's some of the sample XML, notice the ITEM will repeat. InDesign CS4 Docs: XML->Importing XML->Working with Repeating Data It might be that InDesign doesn't work as I'm expecting.ĭoes anyone have any good tips for mail-merge like functionality with an XML document and auto-generation of InDesign pages?īy the way, here's an example of Adobe's great documentation for merging repeated XML elements. Then I use "Import XML" to try and get the data brought in and filled across all 200 pages.I then add a lot of pages (like 200) to the document.I mark my text frames in the Master Document with the appropriate tags.I open the "Tags" window and Import and XML file.I add a bunch of text frames where I want the imported data from the XML file to be places. And Google searches haven't returned much fruitful. The documentation has been pretty poor for me. I've been reading online and working with InDesign's "Import XML" features without any luck. I want to merge the XML data with the InDesign page and have a few hundred pages automatically generated. I've created an XML file with all the appropriate data. I've created some InDesign Pages that I want to use as templates.
